The XXX Olympiad has been allotted to London that
shall host the Summer Olympic Games in 2012. The Games will be held
in London in the months of July and August. London triumphed at the
117th International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Singapore,
getting the majority votes required for it being elected as the host
city for the 2012 Olympic Games. The capital of United Kingdom beat
other cities like Paris, New York, Moscow and Madrid to host the XXX
Olympiad. The opening date of the 2012 Olympic Games is July 27,
2012 and the closing ceremony would take place on August 12, 2012.
The London Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) has
already begun work in direction of hosting yet another spectacular
Olympics. London will become the proud city to host the modern
Olympic Games thrice, as it has already hosted the Games in 1908 and
1948. The London Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games is
chaired by Lord Coe, who is incharge of implementing and
successfully staging the Games. The United Kingdom has also
constituted an Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), which is incharge
of construction of the venues and other relevant infrastructure.
There is also the Government Olympic Executive (GOE), a unit within
the Department of Culture, Media and Sports that is responsible for
coordinating the London 2012 Olympics.
For the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, some existing venues
will be renovated while some new competition sites will also be
built. The majority of the 2012 Games venue has been divided into
three zones within Greater London. These are the Olympic zone, the
River zone and the Central zone. Apart from these there are also
other venues that are located outside the boundaries of Greater
London. One of the principal venues for the 2012 Olympic Games will
be the Olympic Park. The three stages according to which the Olympic
Park is being developed are demolish, dig and design. It
is the ODA or the Olympic Delivery Authority that is responsible for
the construction of the Olympic Park. The Olympic Park will not be
wasted after the 2012 London Olympics are over. The British
authorities plan to transform the Olympic Park into the largest
urban park create in Europe for more than 150 years. The Olympic
Village where athletes and officials will stay will be transformed
into homes for British citizens.
London aims to have an environmental friendly Olympic Games.
Keeping this in mind, the LOCOG is aiming for getting all the
spectators to get to the Games site through public transport,
cycling or on foot. The city has already started gearing up for
accommodating spectators, who will be visiting London during the
Games from all parts of the world. London has accommodation options
to suit every taste from luxury hotels to budget beds. Halls of
Residence and other students accommodation is another affordable
option, one can avail to witness the XXX Olympiad in London. The
London 2012 Games too like the recent modern Olympic Games will be
broadcast to a worldwide audience. They will be broadcast by a
number of regional broadcasters, with the BBC being the sole
broadcaster of the Games in the United Kingdom. The city has thus
indeed started preparing in full swing for the 2012 London Olympics.
